REVIEW: Forgotton Anne

Review: By Jon Donnis
Forgotton Anne is a cinematic 2D adventure platform game.
Once again I find myself reviewing a game that is hand animated and truly stunning to watch while you play.

The game takes place in the Forgotton Lands, a magical land where anything that has been forgotton or lost has come to life as Forgotlings, so that might be a old sweater or a table lamp, literally anything.

We play as Enforcer Anne, her job is to keep order in the Forgotton Lands, she must fight against a rebellion and find her master "Bonku" so they can return to the real world.

In the Forgotton Lands there is an energy called Anima, this powers everything, and without it everything dies, Anne can control this Anima energy, and use it to solve puzzles. She can even absorb it from Forgotlings, although that does seem a bit cruel.

At it's base this game is a mixture between point and click and platformer, but it does have such a cinematic feel. And there is no doubt that the game is possibly more about the story than it is the gameplay.

Even from the first scene you realise that the choices you make will affect the dialog and decisions later in the game, so you can choose to play as a friendly or more strict character. And there are multiple endings that will be determined by your actions.

The puzzles themselves are nothing too hard, and it comes down to pulling levels, or changing the direction that Anima flows through pipes to get you through to the next section, or solve whatever problem you have.

Sadly there is not much variety to the puzzles, but like I said earlier this game is more about the story than the gameplay, and that is not necessarily a bad thing.

I thoroughly enjoyed Forgotton Anne, and although repetitive at times, I never felt bored or left out.

I give this game a very strong 7/10
Review: By Jon Donnis

The game is available now on Nintendo Switch with a 10% discount for one week (9th – 16th) November, regular price: £15.99/$19.99/€19.99).

Forgotton Anne is already available on Steam for £15.49/$19.99/€19.99, on Xbox One for £15.99/$19.99/€19.99, and PlayStation 4 for £15.99/$19.99/€19.99.

REVIEW: TSIOQUE Available on PC/Steam

Review by Jon Donnis:
Tsioque is a classic point and click adventure in the style of Dragon's Lair or King's Quest. Everything has been hand animated, frame by frame, and throughout the game it truly is a wonder to see how beautiful the game is.

We play as Tsioque, a Princess who has been imprisoned in a castle run by the Evil Wizard. Yes I know it is not very original, but that really doesn't matter.

You start off as previously mentioned imprisoned, and you quickly realise that you need to escape, so you will move the cursor around and try to find things to interact with that will help you.

Throughout the game you have to solve puzzles, some harder than others, whether it is something as simple as moving blocks to open a chest, or finding a way to avoid the guards. The game does move along at a decent pace, and there are some funny moments that will surely amuse even the most hardened of gamer.

I finished the game in just about 2 hours, so it is not a long game, but it is a fun one, and despite one little hiccup where I couldn't figure out how to wave a wand properly, I never felt left out of the game, or too frustrated. There are some moments where you need to pay attention, as just clicking everything, or trying things in every order either wont work, or would just take forever, so the game does take some skill.

There is a nice little twist and reveal upon the games completion, which really is lovely.

If you like point and click adventures, you should love this game. It is beautiful to watch, wonderful to play, and the music is also really lovely.

If you are unsure, play the demo first, and I am sure you will end up buying the full game.

This game started out as a dream on Kickstarter, and quickly raised enough funds to be completed. It is a true indy game, and we should all try to support independent game developers, who often do what they do for the love of gaming.

Although short, I really cant recommend this game enough, I absolutely loved it.

I score this 9/10. Just wish there was more of it.

SimCity and EA Maxis Veterans Launch Debut Indie Project: Fort Stars

San Francisco East Bay, California, 8 November 2018 - Magic Fuel Games, a start-up founded by four veteran EA Maxis and SimCity developers, today launches its long-awaited debut title, Fort Stars.

Fort Stars is a next-generation mobile game that allows players to create and customise their own fortresses, each containing a Throne Room that must be protected at all costs. How the player guards their own Throne Room is entirely their choice, and is achieved using an innovative level editor that combines the depth of PC sim-builders with the elegance and simplicity of mobile touchscreens.

The four founders of Magic Fuel Games have more than 60 years’ combined experience at Electronic Arts, having worked on significant triple-A games such as The Sims, Spore, and numerous others up until the group’s final project at EA, SimCity (2013).

“We’re overwhelmed with pride and excitement to finally release Fort Stars after three years of incredible hard work,” said Kevin Shrapnell, Chief Executive at Magic Fuel Games. “With Fort Stars, we saw an opportunity to bring all our years of PC and console games experience to the power and convenience of mobile.”

In Fort Stars, players can safeguard their own fortress with a wealth of strategic options at their disposal, from magic-infused trap-rooms to fully armed swordsmen, fearsome cannon turrets, and even monster-sized guardians that prowl the fortress floors.

Building an impenetrable fortress is just one part of the complete Fort Stars package. Another major game mode spins the defence concept on its head by allowing players to invade other players’ fortresses after assembling a legendary team of raiders.

From a starting roster of 17 Fort Stars, players can create their very own all-star squad and invade armed fortresses using mind-blowing magic spells, ridiculously satisfying skill-shots, and screen-shaking brawls.

Crush the enemy with the fearsome Barbarian. Electrify opponents with the Runemaster. And land the perfect arrow with the Ranger. All 17 heroes can be upgraded, and Magic Fuel will be adding more heroes in regular updates after the game’s launch.

Magic Fuel Games was established in 2015 and secured funding from Chinese giant Seasun Games. In 2018 it expanded its partner network further after signing a publishing deal with the London-based start-up, PlayStack.

Harvey Elliott, the Chief Executive at publisher PlayStack, added: “The pedigree of talent at Magic Fuel Games is a huge draw for us, and seeing the team’s incredibly creative ideas evolve in this debut title has been inspirational. We’re delighted with the result and see big things for Fort Stars.”

TSIOQUE Available on Steam today

7th of November, 2018 – OhNoo Studios: The Polish developers of critically-acclaimed adventure, Tormentum: Dark Sorrow, are back with a new, and similarly ambitious production; TSIOQUE — launching today on PC via Steam. A 2D adventure game inspired by all the best point-and-click traditions.

After Tormentum was praised for its beautiful graphics, inspired by the works of Giger and Beksiński, Ohnoo’s developers look set to apply their artistic approach to digital entertainment once again; through their collaboration with award-winning Polish animator, Alek Wasilewski (Smile).

Alek has received recognition (and awards) in his native Poland, and internationally — for a massive and diverse body of work. Thanks to this latest creative partnership, TSIOQUE stands out with visually-arresting, beautiful, hand-drawn graphics brought to life with frame-by-frame animation. Both fairytale-esque and cartoon-like, TSIOQUE’s art style has already attracted praise from the thousands of gamers who’ve followed its very successful Kickstarter campaign. Funding exceeded 39.000 USD, allowing the studio to realise its vision as fully as possible.

Great social engagement by the creative teams, combined with Kickstarter backing, saw the game receive a full voiceover for all of the dialogue sequences and extraordinary musical score by Edward Harrison (Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, NEOTOKYO) and Elle Kharitou; producing a dynamic arrangement which aligns itself perfectly with events on screen.

In TSIOQUE players take up the role of the titular princess, who is captured and imprisoned in the castle of her ancestors by an Evil Wizard, who casts a powerful spell over it. This, though, is one fiercely independent young lady, who has no intention of waiting for someone to rescue her. She elects to get her hands dirty, improvising with a gutsy — and altogether risky — escape plan. Her will to escape this accursed place makes for a less than traditional fairytale. There are unexpected twists, the apparently straightforward story of ‘girl escapes spellbound castle’ begins to unravel, revealing hidden layers and unexplored themes that take the player well beyond its fantasy story-book setting.

Gameplay is subtly-inspired by magical hits from the past: Dragon's Lair, Indiana Jones and The Fate of Atlantis, Day of the Tentacle or Heart of Darkness. Progress is based squarely on the player’s interactions with the environment, with numerous possibilities hidden throughout stunning locations, all illustrated with an impressive amount of unique animations. This attention to detail contributes to a production of great depth. One that finds plenty of time for humour, yet frequently visits darkness and offers all comers an array of exciting challenges. The decisions made need to be thought about, carefully, as the wrong moves can have dire — and often hilarious — consequences.

TSIOQUE is available now via Steam. For further information on the game and its creators, please visit Ohnoo Studios and Alek Wasilewski, (or Facebook and twitter). At launch TSIOQUE will be available in three language versions: English, German and Polish. Three more will arrive within weeks: Chinese (simplified), Spanish and Russian.

About OhNoo Studio
OhNoo Studio is a three-person developer team, which has debuted on gaming market in 2012 with the premiere of an interactive fairytale Amelia and Terror for the Night. From the beginning, the team’s goal was to create indie games of the highest quality, both in terms of artistic merit and story. The studio received a worldwide acclaim with a well-received adventure game Tormentum: Dark Sorrow, and now it’s back with its newest game, TSIOQUE, co-created with a globally renown animator, Alek Wasilewski. The studio has also announced its next project – the sequel for its flagship production, Tormentum II.

REVIEW: By Jon Donnis
I like GRIP, this is a fun game, and it is fast, and by fast I mean insanely fast.
This is a classic arcade type racer, that defies the laws of physics at every turn. You start off with your basic vehicle and then as you progress you can upgrade and get better vehicles. As you race you can race on almost any surface, which gives any race a whole new dimension literally.

As I said the game is fast but you never feel like you are not in control. And despite going at hundreds and hundreds of miles per hour, you can always pick up a power up that will give you a further speed boast. And talking of power ups, you can collect various weapons too, homing missiles, shields and so on.

The game play does however have a few flaws, some of the collision detection is annoying, you can go from 500 mph to 0 in an instant, and a couple of times from leading the race I hit the side of the finish line and ended up in last place. But this is nothing they wont be able to fix as various updates and bug fixes are released.

The soundtrack is awesome. As are the graphics.

This is a top game, a lot of fun, and I give it a strong 8/10

Thea 2: The Shattering, an innovative 4x hybrid strategy game, will launch on 30 November 2018 in Early Access

November 5, 2018 – MuHa Games: Polish-British indie developer and creator of Thea: The Awakening, the critically well-received 4x strategy, RPG, survival and card game hybrid, have announced Steam Early Access for their much-anticipated sequel: Thea 2: The Shattering. After a successful Kickstarter campaign and a period of intense development, it will appear on EA November 30, 2018 — taking another big step towards a full release, scheduled for 2019.

Early Access includes all the core game mechanics: including exploration, battles, resource gathering, research and crafting. The main quest and a number of side quests will be fully playable. Fans of co-operative play will be pleased to know that co-op modes have also made it into the Early Access build. Developers are aiming to thoroughly analyse feedback from players; helping them tweak game mechanics and add that final polish to the full release.

Thea 2: The Shattering will once again offer a unique blend of 4X turn strategy, RPG, survival — and an original card game with a dark fantasy setting — all inspired by Slavic mythology and culture. Players take on the role of gods, overseeing the actions of their tribe of followers, while navigating a procedurally-generated environment. They will decide on a favoured play style and build on it during their adventure: they may wish to simply explore the world as nomads, take on all comers as a warlord-led army, or master the art of diplomacy; building alliances with other factions and trying to ensure the peaceful survival of their worshippers.

An atmospheric musical score and moody visuals provide a perfect accompaniment to a carefully-crafted Slavic narrative. Co-op multiplayer, free DLC content, an adventure editor and modding tools, all mean this Early Access version will provide a well-rounded strategy experience ahead of next year’s full release.

Further information on Thea 2: The Shattering, as well as news and updates can be found on the game’s Steam page. To learn more about MuHa Games, please visit

Iconic MMO Old School RuneScape launches on iOS and Android today, after 1 million players pre-order it on mobile.

Tuesday 30th October 2018, Cambridge, UK – Old School RuneScape has today become the first mainstream PC MMORPG to launch in full on iOS and Android devices, Jagex has announced. The expansion onto mobile delivers interoperable cross-platform play, enabling players to jump from PC to mobile platforms and back again.

The game's much-anticipated arrival on mobile stores will fulfil over one million pre-orders or pre-registrations for the game placed by mobile gamers in its build to launch. In addition, a further million mobile gamers are already enjoying Old School on Android, following its Members' Beta and soft launch over the summer.

Offering hundreds of hours of adventuring in the free-to-download app, Old School RuneScape joins other popular subscription-based entertainment apps, such as Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube Premium, as it becomes the first mainstream game to transfer its monthly membership1 offering to mobile. Membership provides players with additional content, skills and quests.

Check out the launch trailer

Download the game for free here:

John Colgrave, Producer, Old School RuneScape, said:

"Delivering the same wealth of content as its PC counterpart, expanding Old School RuneScape's availability to mobile devices is an incredible achievement and one the team is extremely proud of. Its arrival on iOS and Android is something our community has been exceptionally hungry for and, through beta and soft launch, we've worked closely with them to refine and optimise Old School's mobile interface, including the introduction of a customisable, one-touch action button, and intuitive touch-screen controls."

Phil Mansell, CEO, Jagex, said:

"Today's launch of Old School RuneScape on mobile leads the charge as we bring two of the world's most popular MMORPGs to the world's most popular gaming devices. We believe in taking our living games to wherever our players want them and, with the mobile editions offering full and seamless cross-platform play with PC, players can now continue their adventures on either platform and on the move. The arrival of Old School RuneScape on mobile, and our ongoing work to also bring RuneScape to mobile, is testament to our investment in the continued growth for both titles and building our vision for living games."

Old School RuneScape is part of the $1 billion RuneScape franchise and is based on the iconic MMORPG as it was in 2007. Featuring adventures for solo play through to 100-player strong raids and delivering new lands and new adventures that take it far beyond a purely nostalgic vanilla experience, Old School RuneScape's popularity has continued to grow in its five years as a living game.

Old School features polled content that must be voted into the game by its players before being put live. Recently revealed content being polled includes a whole new territorial expansion – The Kebos Lowlands – which would bring a mix of low to high-level quests, monsters, and activities to the game. Future proposed content includes a new skill – Warding – and a lost elvish city, all subject to player backing.

Old School's competitive gameplay has made it the #1 MMORPG in competitive gaming thanks to the gripping Deadman tournaments. Streamed live on Twitch, the tournaments, plus all the other Old School streams, has made Old School one of the most-watched titles on the network.

Old School RuneScape is the first of two Jagex titles heading to mobile devices. The other,RuneScape, is currently in its own Members Beta on Android.

The Long Journey Home - Release Trailer

In The Long Journey Home, a misfit crew finds itself stranded in space after mankind’s first experimental jump drive goes wrong. At the wrong side of the universe you’re alone, injured and your spaceship is falling apart. The only way back home is through the universe.

The Long Journey Home is a narrative-heavy rogue-style game where each universe is based on a random seed. Only some of the game’s content is available in each run like four out of the eight major alien races. The quests that you find and are offered can also vary with each run, depending on which crew members you have with you, luck, or how you interact with the different aliens.

This is also a goal built heavily around replay. Unlike most rogue games, you don’t gain power between runs. Instead, you gain knowledge – how the alien races think and are best dealt with, how to turn around negative situations, and where to find quests and opportunities. Sometimes, aliens will approach you for favors or will hunt you for your life.

However, to survive and thrive at the other end of the galaxy, you’ll need to be proactive. Explore ruins for technologies. Figure out how to flatter and bribe cultures into helping you. Ask for work and follow up on gossip. The more you learn, the better are your chances of making it home.

A successful run currently takes about 5-6 hours real-time, though you’re unlikely to get that far the first time through and there’s plenty more to see and do even after that! Try different seeds, crews, and approaches if you’re having difficulties. There’s always a way to progress, even in the worst of situations…

In addition, keep in mind that The Long Journey Home is a challenging game and on your attempt to get home you’ll fail multiple times! You have to adapt to friendly and hostile aliens as well as different planets’ geographies. Be sure to check every planet’s details before attempting to land and getting your hands on valuable resources, as some are dangerous and you’ll take damage simply by being there, while others have high wind, gravity, and temperatures that make piloting extra dangerous.

The biggest ever RuneFest heralds the launch of RuneScape Mobile’s Members Beta.

Monday 8th October 2018, Cambridge, UK – Access to RuneScape Mobile's new Members Beta is being made available from today, Jagex has announced. This limited Beta marks the next step in bringing RuneScape to mobile devices, as the development team continues to work closely with the RuneScape community to deliver the optimum player experience over the coming months. Jagex made the announcement at RuneFest, its biggest ever player convention, held this past weekend at Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre.

RuneScape Mobile, which on full release will be available on both iOS and Android devices for free-to-play and subscribing players, features full, cross-platform interoperability with PC platforms, allowing for adventures to continue while on the sofa or on the move. The milestone announcement follows hot on the heels of Old School RuneScape Mobile, which has been enjoying a successful Members Beta over the summer, and is scheduled to launch on mobile devices on 30th October.

Further announcements from RuneFest came thick and fast this weekend:

The RuneScape team announced that 'Till Death Do Us Part', an all-new World Event in RuneScape and the first since 2016, launches today. Taking place throughout October, the event sees the game's version of the Four Riders of the Apocalypse emerge on Gielinor.

Additionally, the team introduced new quests and fan-voted content that will launch this winter, including the Mining and Smithing rework; the time-looping, investigative adventure 'Needle Skips'; and the final part of the Elite Dungeons trilogy, a new boss encounter for hardy adventurers that sheds light on the mysterious Ambassador.

Headline announcements for Old School RuneScape saw the team confirm key content soon to be polled to players. This includes the elven city of Prifddinas, which launched inRuneScape in 2014. If successfully polled, the city would be reinterpreted and introduced into the nostalgic iteration next year. Entry to the city relies on the completion of a new Grandmaster quest, 'Song of the Elves' – which will conclude an Old School RuneScape questline for the first time since the game launched in 2013.

Furthermore, players will be polled on an expansion of the Old School-exclusive continent of Zeah. If successful, the content would see its unexplored lands to the west uncovered and expanded in 2019 with the release of the Kebos Lowlands, and feature a raft of new adventures and activities for players to explore.

RuneFest began courtesy of the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and the world premiere of RuneScape Live: Gielinor in Harmony, a musical extravaganza that took the audience on an orchestral and story-driven journey through the world of Gielinor. Featuring a brand-new storyline written byRuneScape's narrative team, which saw a RuneScape and an Old School RuneScapeplayer complete a quest in each other's game world, Gielinor in Harmony set the tone for the revelries to continue.

RuneFest itself presented thousands of players with an immersive festival experience set in Rellekka, the Viking-inspired northern lands of RuneScape. In addition to keynote reveals and announcements, players completed activities based on the game's Fremmenik Trials, attended behind-the-scenes talks hosted by developers, and went hands-on with both RuneScape and Old School Mobile.

Phil Mansell, CEO, Jagex said:

"RuneFest is at the heart of our living games philosophy, and it has played an enormous part in growing our RuneScape games to become a $1billon success story. It brings the games, our players, and the Jagex team together to share an incredible experience that exists outside of the game. This was the biggest and best RuneFest ever, and reflects the continuing strong growth in the communities playing our games. RuneScape Live was also incredible, and I thank our team and the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra for an unforgettable night.

"We had a great time revealing our plans for RuneScape and Old School RuneScape over the coming months, and it was brilliant to see the reaction from our players both at RuneFestas well as on the live stream. We're just three weeks away from bringing Old School RuneScape to mobile devices, which has already been incredibly well received by players. The announcement that RuneScape Mobile is also beginning its limited Members Beta from today, and will open to more members over the coming weeks and months, means that both our communities will soon enjoy their adventures through Gielinor while on the move.

"Every year, RuneFest delivers a fantastic celebration of the games and our community, but it's also a great opportunity for us to look ahead to what's to come. Thank you to everybody who travelled to RuneFest's new home at Farnborough, and we're looking forward to returning next autumn."

New BBC VR film flies you to Berlin at the height of the Second World War

A powerful new virtual reality film launches this week from the BBC, in which viewers join the RAF on a bombing run during the Berlin Blitz.

1943 Berlin Blitz launches this Thursday on the Oculus and Steam stores. Viewers are put in the footsteps of BBC war reporter, Wynford Vaughan-Thomas, and sound recordist, Reg Pidsley, as they document their flight on a terrifying mission over Berlin.

Taken from the BBC Archive, Wynford’s commentary was one of the most ambitious and dangerous reports made during World War Two giving crucial insight into the war to those listening at home. The original radio broadcast went out over the airwaves on 4 September 1943, just a few hours after the plane landed safely back at RAF Langar in Nottinghamshire.

Viewers will experience the jeopardy and the excitement of the bombing raid, as VR transports them into the belly of Lancaster bomber ‘F for Freddie’. As the plane flies high over Berlin while anti-aircraft shells burst all around, the sense of danger is palpable, and justified - just four months after this flight F for Freddie was shot down over Stettin.

The Lancaster was the most successful heavy bomber employed by the RAF in World War Two and, along with the Spitfire, became something of a British icon in the wake of the war. More than 7,000 of the planes were built, flying upwards of 150,000 sorties.

Created by BBC Northern Ireland and Immersive VR Education, in partnership with BBC VR Hub; 1943 Berlin Blitz marks the 100th anniversary of the RAF and the brave, bold and groundbreaking journalism the BBC is built on. Wynford Vaughan-Thomas’s original radio programme is available to listen in full from Radio 4 Extra on BBC iPlayer Radio.

Peter Rippon, editor of BBC Archive, says: “We have been overwhelmed by the response to Berlin Blitz so far. People are finding it profoundly moving. The authenticity of the audio and the nobility of the characters involved, combined with virtual reality means audiences can now relive with past with an intensity not previously possible.”

Zillah Watson, head of BBC VR Hub, says: “This film is a wonderful example of how virtual reality can bring the BBC’s archive to life in a way we’ve never really seen before. VR adds a vivid, tangible dimension to an exceptional and extraordinary piece of journalism, and brings the past and future together beautifully - using a 75-year-old broadcast to demonstrate the very best of what this new form of storytelling has to offer.”

The new experience is available from Thursday on the Oculus and Steam stores for Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive headsets. It will also soon be available to watch in 360 on Oculus Go, Samsung Gear VR and Google Daydream. Additionally, Imperial War Museums will be showing the film at its Duxford and North museums over the coming months on selected dates.

REVIEW: Elea - For Xbox & Steam

Review by Jon Donnis
Elea is an episodic first-person Sci-Fi adventure, you play as a space scientist, In 2073, Earth and all humans on it were struck by a childhood disease that causes uncontrollable rage and Elea’s husband Ethan joined an expedition to colonize a habitable exoplanet, to save humanity from extinction.

The ship he was on, Pilgrimage, went radio silent shortly after it reached planet Solace.

13 years later, Elea joins a mission on the RSS Recovery to investigate the fate of the expedition.

I have to admit the start of the game is a bit confusing, and you will find yourself getting disorientated quite often, but that is part of the experience. This first episode of Elea finds you mainly looking around the spaceship you are on, and the graphics are outstanding, and you do feel quite immersed, although the puzzles you have to solve are pretty basic, and there are a lot of bugs in the game, which are being fixed with each update.

The game suffers from a slow start, and there is a tedious nature to some of the puzzles and you find yourself wondering around aimlessly quite a lot until you figure things out.

The game does pick up though, and towards the end of the episode there is a feeling of urgency in one of the chases you do, even if you die for stupid reasons.

I am interested to see what further episodes bring, but I am not sure if Episode 1 is enough to hook people into buying Episode 2 when it is released. A slow start and some tedious early game play plagues a very promising game.

I would give Elea a fair 6 out of 10.

About the Game
Elea is a first-person storytelling experience that revolves around space scientist River-Elea. It’s the year 2073 and mankind is living in revolutionary times. Space colonization is making rapid progress and humans have built thriving colonies on Mars and the moons Titan, Ganymede and Europa. Alien life forms have finally been discovered and the awakening of a sentient AI enables spaceships to travel at lightning speed. In the midst of these developments, humanity faces extinction due to a neural mutation, turning all earth-born children into violent psychopaths.

Against this tumultuous futuristic backdrop, the story of Elea takes form. It all starts in a secluded house on the shores of Mexico, where Elea awakens. She’s pregnant with her second son, has just moved in with her husband and first son, and is preparing for a new life. In reality however, Elea is not in her home but in a recovery room somewhere, years later, revisiting her memories in some sort of simulation. As the memory trip progresses, the house and its surroundings start to change and deteriorate, as time passes and grief descends on a home that was once full of love and expectations.
