REVIEW: Elea - For Xbox & Steam

Review by Jon Donnis
Elea is an episodic first-person Sci-Fi adventure, you play as a space scientist, In 2073, Earth and all humans on it were struck by a childhood disease that causes uncontrollable rage and Elea’s husband Ethan joined an expedition to colonize a habitable exoplanet, to save humanity from extinction.

The ship he was on, Pilgrimage, went radio silent shortly after it reached planet Solace.

13 years later, Elea joins a mission on the RSS Recovery to investigate the fate of the expedition.

I have to admit the start of the game is a bit confusing, and you will find yourself getting disorientated quite often, but that is part of the experience. This first episode of Elea finds you mainly looking around the spaceship you are on, and the graphics are outstanding, and you do feel quite immersed, although the puzzles you have to solve are pretty basic, and there are a lot of bugs in the game, which are being fixed with each update.

The game suffers from a slow start, and there is a tedious nature to some of the puzzles and you find yourself wondering around aimlessly quite a lot until you figure things out.

The game does pick up though, and towards the end of the episode there is a feeling of urgency in one of the chases you do, even if you die for stupid reasons.

I am interested to see what further episodes bring, but I am not sure if Episode 1 is enough to hook people into buying Episode 2 when it is released. A slow start and some tedious early game play plagues a very promising game.

I would give Elea a fair 6 out of 10.

About the Game
Elea is a first-person storytelling experience that revolves around space scientist River-Elea. It’s the year 2073 and mankind is living in revolutionary times. Space colonization is making rapid progress and humans have built thriving colonies on Mars and the moons Titan, Ganymede and Europa. Alien life forms have finally been discovered and the awakening of a sentient AI enables spaceships to travel at lightning speed. In the midst of these developments, humanity faces extinction due to a neural mutation, turning all earth-born children into violent psychopaths.

Against this tumultuous futuristic backdrop, the story of Elea takes form. It all starts in a secluded house on the shores of Mexico, where Elea awakens. She’s pregnant with her second son, has just moved in with her husband and first son, and is preparing for a new life. In reality however, Elea is not in her home but in a recovery room somewhere, years later, revisiting her memories in some sort of simulation. As the memory trip progresses, the house and its surroundings start to change and deteriorate, as time passes and grief descends on a home that was once full of love and expectations.

REVIEW: Rigid Force Alpha

Review by Jon Donnis
I grew up playing arcade shooters like R-Type, in fact I spent a small fortune at the local arcade on that very game. So when I first heard about Rigid Force Alpha I was excited but also cautious.

With this being a PC / Steam game and this being a very much arcade/console type of game there will always be control issues, for example playing this using your keyboard is a big no no. And after a bit of teething trouble I managed to get my generic PS3 controller working, and boy does it make a big difference.

This is everything you love about side scrolling shoot 'em ups. But in glorious 2018 graphics, and an incredible soundtrack too.

You shoot the bad guys, wave after wave, you collect power ups, change weapons, collect orbs which allow you even bigger power weapons. And with various difficulty settings, this is perfect for newbies as well as seasoned shoot em up gamers like myself.

A really fun game, that I can really recommend. 9/10

More about the game:
Rigid Force Alpha breathes new life into the classic side-scrolling shooter genre with its lovingly hand-crafted 3D models, stunning environments, detailed effects and an electrifying Synthwave soundtrack.

Arm your fighter with numerous upgradeable weapon systems and supplemental Force Shards! Collect Energy Orbs to fill up your energy supply and eventually unleash an extremely powerful blast against your foes!

REVIEW: 8-Bit Armies

Review by Jon Donnis
8-Bit Armies is a retro RTS game.

Following on from other recent "8-Bit" games, they continue the style of colourful, blocky pixel type graphics. This really does bring back memories for people my age of these types of games.

This is a simple game, 25 single player missions, 12 co-op missions, multiplayer and skirmish modes.

In the style of C&C & Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 1 & 2, people familiar with those games will instantly feel at home.

Best played with friends, but probably best to play through the single player missions first, unlock various things that way and then you will be better prepared for the multiplayer games.

This is a simple, fun game, perhaps not for fans of modern RTS games, but more for fans of old school games like Command and Conquer.

It might not win any awards for innovation or originality, but then that is not what this game is aiming for.

Perhaps the price is a little steep right now, but there is always a sale around the corner.

I give this game a solid 7/10

RuneScape’s record-breaking library of original music to be officially released for the very first time

RuneScape’s record-breaking library of original music to be officially released for the very first time
New orchestral music and classic tracks from Jagex’s iconic MMORPGs head to vinyl, CD & digital via a new partnership with Laced Records.

Watch “RuneScape: The Road to Harmony”, featuring The Philharmonia Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios, here:

9am, Friday 14th September 2018, Cambridge, UK – For the very first time, iconic music from both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape has been officially released to stream and purchase, publisher Jagex announced today. Thanks to a new partnership with Laced Records, two albums – RuneScape: The Orchestral Collection and RuneScape: Original Soundtrack Classics – are available digitally right now and are open for pre-order on CD and double deluxe vinyl albums.

Pre-Order via Laced Records:
North America: http://www.lacedrecords.com
ROW: http://www.lacedrecords.co

Featuring music rearranged by BAFTA award-winning composer James Hannigan (Harry Potter, Command & Conquer, Dead Space 3) and performed by The Philharmonia Orchestra at the world-renowned Abbey Road Studios in December 2017 and by the Slovak National Symphony Orchestra in Bratislava in 2012, RuneScape: The Orchestral Collection takes listeners on a classical journey to the fantasy world of Gielinor. The tracks from the Abbey Road sessions are all new compositions or new arrangements of classic tracks, with many making their debut on the album.

RuneScape: Original Soundtrack Classics takes a much more nostalgic journey through some of the most loved tracks from Old School RuneScape and the early days of RuneScape. The vinyl album is arranged to follow the first journey a player might have taken through Gielinor. The CD and digital versions include an incredible 19 bonus tracks, bursting with player favourites that would have been wrong to leave out. Pre-ordering the vinyl versions will also unlock digital copies, allowing people to enjoy their favourite tracks without delay!

RuneScape currently holds the Guinness World Record for the most original pieces of music in a video game (including expansions), with 1,198 tracks (July 2017). This figure has been growing ever since the game’s release in 2001, and in the last 12 months alone swelled to 1,228 tracks. Jagex’s partnership with Laced is a direct response to an online poll in 2017 that saw over 15,000 members of the RuneScape community overwhelmingly tell Jagex how much they wanted to see this library of music released, as well as what their favourite tracks are.

Additional music from the library are planned for release in themed collections over the coming months, beginning with two further soundtrack albums from RuneScape available digitally today RuneScape: The Arc and RuneScape: Menaphos.

“Jagex has an open dialogue with its community, involving players in how we develop the game and listening to what they have to say,” said Guy Pearce, Director of Brand and Creative Production.

“The community has been telling us for a long time that RuneScape’s music is, for many, the soundtrack to their youth and that they would like it to be more easily available. So, we’re thrilled to be able to make original, current and classical versions of some of their favourite tracks available for them to listen to where, when and how they want. This includes new previously unheard arrangements by James Hannigan, recorded with the Philharmonia Orchestra at Abbey Road last year.

“Holding the Guinness World Record for most original pieces of music in a video game is a huge source of pride for Jagex. Together these releases show the extent of the musical journey we have been on and we hope past, current and future players will enjoy them.”

REVIEW: Another Sight - PC/Steam

Synopsis:
A teenager who has lost her sight and a mysterious cat team up in a surreal fantasy adventure into the unexpected, weaving a tale that brings together some of the world’s greatest minds: Monet, Tesla, Edison and other historical cultural icons.

Review by Jon Donnis:
I have been looking forward to this game for a while, so to say expectations were high would be an understatement.

First lets look at the positives, the game is beautiful, stunning graphics, and an awesome soundtrack. A lot of effort has been made to make this game look and sound good. Special mention goes to the voice acting.

It also is an original idea, your main character is blind, and she can only interact with her surroundings through her senses. She is accompanied by a cat who you can switch controls to.

Now the negatives, the controls are poor, very clunky, jumping to new platforms never feels like you are quite in control. Because the teenager character is blind, she is incredibly slow to move and that is so frustrating. The cat is much better, much faster, but again trying to jump around is very hit and miss.

And regardless of how a game looks, if you don't feel in control of your characters you soon can lose interest.

Although a great idea for a game, it just doesn't quite have the right feel, it is very basic puzzle solving, move a lever here, swap to the cat to go stand on a pressure pad, switch back and so on. The game also has quite a few bugs which can end up with you getting stuck, or the cat disappearing.

I hoped for so much more and maybe after 6 months of bug fixes and improvements to the control systems, the game will be much better, but for now I can only give the game a 5/10

Old School RuneScape iOS and Android release date revealed

Wednesday 5th September 2018, Cambridge, UK – Old School RuneScape will launch on iOS and Android devices on Tuesday 30th October, Jagex announced today. The MMORPG offers a full cross-platform experience on mobile and PC, and will be available for members and non-members to enjoy.

Jagex also confirmed Old School RuneScape is now available to Pre-Order and Pre-Register from the App Store and Google Play at https://osrs.game/MobilePreRegistration

John Colgrave, Producer, Old School RuneScape Mobile said:

“The next few weeks are going to be incredibly exciting for myself, the Old School RuneScape mobile team, and for Jagex as a whole, as we count down towards the 30th October launch date. It’s been an incredible journey for us; we’ve worked tirelessly to bring the full Old School RuneScape adventure to mobile platforms, as well as enable a seamless cross-platform experience for our current, returning, and new players! Today’s invitation to Pre-Order and Pre-Register the game on the App Store and Google Play is a hugely significant one, and we can’t wait to throw open the doors next month.”

The highly-anticipated announcement comes after this summer’s extensive and overwhelmingly successful ‘Members Only Beta’, in addition to soft launches in Canada and Nordic countries, which have already seen some 500,000 Android players continue their adventures while on the move, on the sofa, or poolside on vacation.

Conor Crowley, Director of Game Development, Jagex said:

“2018 has been a year of significant milestones for Old School RuneScape on mobile, from the first closed betas at the start of the year, to the successful Members Only Beta and recent Canadian and Nordic soft launches over the summer, but none of them have been as highly anticipated as this. We are incredibly proud to confirm that Old School RuneScape on mobile is now just a matter of weeks from a full launch; we know our players – both existing and returning – have long wanted to play the game they love while away from their PCs. The countdown to 30th October is underway!”

Ever since a prototype of Old School RuneScape on mobile was shown at RuneFest 2017, the development team at Jagex has worked closely with the game’s community to ensure it delivers the same immersive living game experience, regardless of platform or device. Its top-level interface has been refined and optimised on mobile devices, including the introduction of a customisable, one-touch action button, and intuitive touch-screen controls. Featuring the RuneScape franchise’s trademark accessibility, players with devices running Lollipop (Android 5) and iOS 10 will be able to start or continue their Old School adventures across the world of Gielinor on the sofa or on the move.

Today’s announcement coincides with the launch of Old School RuneScape’s 139th quest: Making Friends with My Arm, where players will assist the maligned troll ‘My Arm’ as he tries to establish relations with the troll town, Weiss. Mobile players will be able to help My Arm out, as well as experience the many thousands of hours of available adventures, mini games, and skilling activities Old School RuneScape has to offer, in just a matter of weeks.
